Transmission Trouble

About two weeks ago Patrick had gone downstairs to switch over laundry from the washer to the dryer. He came back up about 10 minutes later and said that the washer wasn't spinning out the water from the clothes. *Sigh* I really wasn't sure what was wrong with the washer either, so after about 3 days of debate, we called the repair man to look at our five year old washer.

Fast forward to Wednesday, when the repair man came to the house. He spent about an hour with the washer. Then he dropped this bomb....the TRANSMISSION in my WASHER is BROKEN! Transmission?!?! I didn't even know washing machines had transmissions! Apparently the washer was unable to shift from agitation to spinning. Then there was more bad news. The transmission was 2 months out of warranty! The total to fix my machine? Almost $500! Needless to say, we decided just to purchase a new machine that will be cheaper than fixing our current washer.

I can't believe that I have to replace my washer after only 5 years. What does that say about us? Are we super dirty? Do we have to many clothes? I don't know. This really couldn't have come at a worse financial time, but thankfully both Sears and Lowes are having 12 months same as cash financing and I am thankful that God allowed that promotion to be going on when I need a new machine. Unfortunately it will be Tuesday before I am able to get a new machine, so to the laundromat we go today. I thought those days were over when I left grad school!

No, y'all aren't exceptionally dirty, they just don't make machinery like they used to. I find it appalling that it's cheaper to just replace something than to fix it, but it's always that way. Ditto the stuff breaking like a month after the warranty expires - I think they design it that way.

By contrast, the washer my parents bought when I was born lasted until I was out of college!!! It was avocado green, granted, but it worked fine! Isn't that crazy?

I'm waiting for our washer to go out - it will be five years old in October, and that seems to be about the lifespan for washers and dryers unfortunately.

Our dishwasher broke a while ago and we are still dithering over whether to call someone to come fix it (thus paying the service charge for the plumber or whoever to come) or just to get a new one. Meanwhile we're washing dishes by hand. Which is a total joy with sippy cups!

OK, enough ranting!

If you haven't bought your replacement yet, let me know and I will bring in the Consumer Reports issue that rates washers and dryers. I am not sure what brand you have, but Maytags really do hold up well (as I knock on wood for luck and hope I haven't just jinxed myself).
